Killybegs Regeneration

Killybegs, Co. Donegal

The Killybegs 2040 Regeneration Project involves the refurbishment of the derelict Island House on Shore Road, Killybegs, together with the transformation of the Diamond public car park into a high-quality civic space incorporating reconfigured parking.

The project delivers a reimagined Island House building, providing a new tourism facility and visitor reception centre, public conveniences, and modern office accommodation. As a landmark building located at the heart of Killybegs town centre, Island House acts as a focal point for the wider regeneration initiative. The building is composed of generous, bright, and flexible open spaces, enhanced by expansive glazing throughout. The design provides building users with a strong visual and sensory connection to the unique coastal setting, maximising natural daylight, framing panoramic views of the harbour and surrounding landscape, and reinforcing the building’s relationship with Killybegs’ maritime character and public realm.

The development also includes a significantly enhanced public realm at the Diamond, along Main Street, and on Shore Road, creating attractive, accessible, and high-quality civic spaces that improve connectivity, encourage social interaction, and support local economic activity throughout Killybegs.

The scheme is jointly funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund (RRDF), in partnership with Donegal County Council, reflecting a shared commitment to the sustainable regeneration and long-term vitality of Killybegs.
