Glenmaire

Kilcar, Co. Donegal

The project involved the addition of a high-quality contemporary extension alongside extensive refurbishment works to the existing dwelling. Collectively, these works have delivered a substantial improvement in design quality and visual impact, transforming a modest and outdated building into a contemporary dwelling of architectural merit that now responds positively to its setting.

No longer suited to its new owners, the original house was reimagined to better respond to both lifestyle and setting. The brief called for enhanced views towards the Atlantic, a reconfigured layout, and a stronger relationship with the surrounding environment, all wrapped in a contemporary new design. Glenmarie has been transformed into a striking modern home, breathing new life into it.

A carefully considered palette of high-quality materials, including natural stone, smooth render, dark-framed glazing, and slate roofing, which reference the local vernacular while expressing a refined contemporary aesthetic. The extensive use of glazing allows for abundant natural light into the dwelling and creates a strong visual and functional connection between internal living spaces and the surrounding landscape of Kilcar.

Although the extension is expressed as a bold contemporary addition, the home maintains a warm and welcoming character using carefully selected, high-quality materials and select furniture internally. Natural textures, refined finishes, and bespoke detailing soften the modern architectural form, creating comfortable and inviting spaces that balance contemporary design with a sense of home.
